LAHAD DATU: Police here are investigating a male teacher who hit a Form One student 22 times on the buttocks as punishments for being absent.
The 38-year-old teacher of a government secondary school here meted out the punishment in front of other students last Wednesday.
He had forgotten to bring his cane to the class and as an alternative he used a dustpan holder instead.
As a result, the 13-year-old boy sustained injuries to his buttocks.
Accompanied by his family, the boy lodged a police report at the district police headquarters on Saturday.
District Police Chief, ACP Nasri Mansor said the teacher was then called in to have his statement taken.
Initial investigation showed that the teacher was punishing the student for missing school without permission on April 22.
Further investigation revealed that the student did not attend school because he followed his father to see a Taekwando tournament in Tawau.
“However, the teacher has not been detained and the case is still being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt,” he said.
The offence charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code provides for imprisonment up to three years, a fine, or whipping, or any two of the punishment upon conviction.-SabahNewsToday
