KOTA KINABALU: The directive to place a carpet on lift number 1 at the PWD Building is a minor facelift to the facility aimed at presenting a good impression to important visitors.

Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony who was asked about the issue on Thursday took members of the media to see the elevator concerned.

“Look at the (condition) lift. This lift is being used by all top government officers and also investors. It is very shabby and floor has cracks here and there.

“So by putting the carpet it will hide the cracks and at the same time give a good impression to the visitors.

“What will the visitors especially investors think when they come and see this?” he asked.

The directive for PWD to give the elevator a carpet facelift was made in a letter dated Feb 7 and signed by Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr Ismail S Charles.

The letter, however, found its way to the social media and went viral to the extent attracting a cheeky response from former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak asking if he can be of assistance to PWD to find a suitable carpet.

Netizens were critical of the letter questioning the necessity of the move and that all taxpayers should be allowed to use the elevator as well.

However, it is worth noting that out of the five elevators at the building lobby, lift no.1 is designated only to stop at the fifth floor, which is the PWD director’s office and the minister’s office at the seventh floor.-SabahNewsToday
