Kota Kinabalu MP hands out RM15,000 to needy Muslims

KOTA KINABALU: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu Chan Foong Hin handed out aids worth a total of RM15,000 from his MP allocation to seven needy Muslim groups around his constituency.

“The handout was made in conjunction with the Program Tautan Kasih Ramadhan organizsd by NGO Pertubuhan Muafakat Sabah (MUAFAKAT) together with the MP’s office,” Chan said in a statement here today.

Chan, who is also DAP Sabah Secretary, said that the main purpose of the programme was to provide assistance to the needy Muslims around his constituency.

The Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary constituency consists three state seats namely, Likas, Luyang and Api-Api.

“Hopefully, it would help lessen their burden and allow them to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri which falls on the 5th and 6th June this year,” he said.

Chan, together with MUAFAKAT chairman Khairuddin Daud and Likas Assemblyman Tan Lee Fatt, personally visited over six surau and mosques located around Kota Kinabalu during the programme held over the weekend.

The activities on June 1 and 2 included presenting duit raya to 50 tahfiz students at the Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, handing over of cash donation towards the repairing of Surau al-Ikhlas, Kampung Kopungit, and handing over of daily necessities to 30 needy individuals at the Masjid Nurul Hidayah, Taman Keramat.

Chan also gave a cash donation for the maintenance of the surau at Flat Persekutuan KM4, Kota Kinabalu, and further made a gift donation to Tadarus al-Quran recital students at the Masjid Nurul Aman, Kampung Cenderamata.

He also contributed for the upgrading of Surau Taman Sri Gaya, Kota Kinabalu that was handed in a simple ceremony witnessed by Youth and Sports Minister cum Luyang Assemblyman Phoong Jin Zhe.

Surau Taman Sri Gaya is located within the Luyang state constituency.

Patrick Chia, Chief Liaison Officer at the MP’s office, represented Chan in attending to the programme at Masjid Nurul Hikmah as Chan had to attend another breaking of fast event with the Prime Minister.

“This is the first time that I am able to visit and enter these surau and mosques in my area as a DAP member of parliament. I am grateful and I would like to express my appreciation to Khairuddin and MUAFAKAT for giving me this opportunity to meet and get to know my constituents better,” said Chan.
