KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) through its Academy of Language Studies Shah Alam as well as UiTM Sabah is organising the 6th Malaysian International Conference on Academic Strategies in English Language Teaching (My_CASELT) and the Third Language Invention, Innovation and Design Expo (LIID Expo) 2019 from Aug 21 till 22 hefe.
The events are being held with support from its strategic partners namely the Sabah Ministry of Education and Innovation, the Institute of Leadership and Development (ILD) and the US Embassy.
Minister of Education and Innovation, Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, who is a co-patron of My_CASELT 2019, is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony in Pacific Sutera at 10.30am on Aug 21.
Both UiTM Vice-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Ir. Dr Mohd Azraai Kassim and Rector of UiTM Sabah, Associate Professor Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Kadir Haji Rosline are expected to be on hand to witness the opening ceremony.
Themed “Empowering ELT Professionals in A Globalised Environment”, among the objectives of My_CASELT 2019 was to realise the vision and mission of UiTM in achieving academic excellence in English language education.
Through the programme, UiTM Academy of Language Studies hoped to carve a niche area in the ‘Teaching of English Language for Non-Native Speakers’ as well as to develop and strengthen UiTM’s approach in teaching English so as to enhance the employability of its graduates both in the domestic and international market.
At the same time, the conference aimed at supporting national initiative to make Malaysia a hub for world-class English language education.
Meanwhile, the LIID Expo 2019 is themed “Empowering Practitioners’ Innovation in Language Teaching”, with the aim to provide academicians, students and industries the platform to highlight inventions, innovations and designs in the field of language learning and teaching.
About 300 local and international ELT professionals, researchers and experts are expected to attend both these events where 93 My_CASELT presentations and 41 teaching innovations will be delivered and judged.
There would be two keynote speeches by Dr Linda New Levine and Associate Professor Dr Atta Gebril.
Dr Levine is with the US Embassy and a consultant to public school teachers of language learning among children as well as to the teaching of English as a foreign language in both primary and secondary classrooms programme.
Dr Gebril, on the other hand, is the MATESOL programme director at the Department of Applied Linguistics, American University in Cairo.
Among the plenary speakers at the My_CASELT included Professor Dr Othman Ismail of UiTM Shah Alam, Assistant Minister of Sabah Ministry of Education and Innovation Jenifer Lasimbang, Professor Dr Supyan Hussin of Institute of the Malay World & Civilisation (ATMA) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Associate Professor Dr Arshad Abd Samad of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Sirhajwan Idek, an English teacher from Keningau Vocational College.
A welcoming dinner for My_CASELT and LIID Expo participants will be held at the Grand Ballroom, Magellan Sutera Resort and Spa on Aug 21, which is expected to be attended by Deputy Chief Minister cum Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Christina Liew.
On Aug 22, LIID Expo 2019 will be held at the Pacific Sutera Hotel beginning at 8 am with the LIID Academic Innovation Pitching and Judging. This will be followed by a sharing session on “Innovative Language Teaching and Learning.”
The closing ceremony of the My_CASELT 2019 and LIID Expo 2019 is expected to be officiated by UiTM Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Ir. Dr Mohd Azraai Kassim.-SabahNewsToday
