KOTA KINABALU: An online public petition against the introduction of Sabah Temporary Pass (PSS) has been initiated on the change.org website by a group called Original Sabahan.
Since the petition, titled Rakyat Tulen Sabah katakan Tidak kepada PSS / Genuine Sabahans say No to PSS, was put up on Thursday, it has been gaining momentum gathering nearly 7,000 signatures.
Among the reasons of the objection as stated in the petition was that the introduction of PSS would not solve the issue of the high numbers of illegal immigrants in Sabah, and that the people of Sabah wanted these illegal immigrants to be deported back to their respective countries instead.
It also highlighted the concerns of many Sabahans that the PSS could be abused and used as supporting documents to obtain permanent residence status or citizenship.
Many of those who had signed the petition shared similar views as can be seen in the comments section of the petition.
The PSS was announced by Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Sept 6 to better manage foreign nationals residing in the state starting June 1 next year.
News report quoted Muhyiddin as saying that there were an estimated more than 600,000 holders of the IMM13 documents, Kad Burung Burung and census certifcates combined in the state.
The plan, however was met with mixed responses with the opposition parties, NGOs as well as individuals objecting citing fears that it might lead to abuse.
