State government to assist sailing

KOTA KINABALU: Minister of Youth and Sports Phoong Jin Zhe assured that the State Government to assist the Sabah Sailing Association (Saila) in order to help the sports of sailing grow.

“For decades the association have been asking for better facilities among others. So, it now falls under my responsibility and I will work closely with the association to help Sabah’s sailing sports grow,” he said.

Met after the prize presentation ceremony of the KFC – 26th Merdeka Day Open Regatta 2019 at the Kinabalu Yacht Club in Tanjung Aru near here today, Phoong said his ministry would look into ways that it can helped Saila.

He was also astonished to see so many sailors from several countries such as Indonesia, Chinese Taipeh and Brunei participating in the regatta.

Phoong also believed sailing could help in promoting the state’s tourism industry therefore it is like killing two birds with one stone.

“I think as far as the State Government is concerned, we will continue to support sailing,” he said.

Earlier, Phoong accompanied by Saila Vice President Faizal Shakir and and Vice Commodore Ronald Cooke presented the prize to the winners. Also on hand was KYC Commodore, Albert Shim.-SabahNewsToday
